CVI value

The Creative Vitality™ Index compares the per capita concentration of creative activity in two regions. Data on creative industries, occupations, and cultural nonprofit revenues are indexed using a population-based calculation. What is the difference between the Creative Vitality Index and an economic impact study of the arts?

An economic impact study of the arts generally measures the ripple effects in a local economy of funds emerging from the expenditures of nonprofit arts organizations. Some arts economic impact studies also measure the economic impact of artists who live and sell work in a community. Still others include the economic impact of funds expended for travel, food, lodging, and other expenses by persons attending an arts event. An economic impact study of the arts reports on the volume of funds generated by and related to an arts activity. It also evaluates the impact of the ripple effect of those … Continued
Data year vs Fiscal year

Data year vs Fiscal year

In the CV™Suite, it is important to differentiate between “data years,” “calendar years,” and “fiscal years.” A “data year” in the CV™Suite refers to the actual year that the data represent. For example, 2012 occupation figures reflect jobs in 2012. A “calendar” year simply refers to the actual year when data was released. An example of the difference between “data” and “calendar” years would be that nonprofit revenue for data year 2011 was released in the calendar year 2013. The lag between data and calendar years is due to data collection and processing procedures. Finally, “fiscal year” refers to how … Continued
Data Updates

Data Updates

CVSuite updates data throughout the year as new data becomes available from our data providers. We retroactively update all data years on the site with more accurate data so that year-over-year trends are comparable. It is important to distinguish the difference between a data version and a data year. Each update corresponds to a data version that allows us to track changes to the data between updates. Our data updates are assigned a data version number (i.e. 2018.3) that corresponds with Emsi’s data versions. A “data year” in the CVSuite refers to the actual year that the data represent. For example, … Continued

Nonprofit Methodology Change 2015

04/28/2017   Summary: Recent changes at the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS) in 2016 has delayed the release of the I990 Core PC data which is the main source for CVSuite’s nonprofit data. In order to avoid delays in CVSuite’s data update, we investigated other sources for nonprofit revenues data. We researched a new methodology that is equally comparable to the I990 Core PC data that uses the same data source NCCS uses to create the I990 Core PC file. Nonprofit revenues data originates from the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) financial files, a collection of I990 filings from all nonprofit businesses throughout the US. … Continued
