Data year vs Fiscal year

Data year vs Fiscal year

In the CV™Suite, it is important to differentiate between “data years,” “calendar years,” and “fiscal years.” A “data year” in the CV™Suite refers to the actual year that the data represent. For example, 2012 occupation figures reflect jobs in 2012. A “calendar” year simply refers to the actual year when data was released. An example of the difference between “data” and “calendar” years would be that nonprofit revenue for data year 2011 was released in the calendar year 2013. The lag between data and calendar years is due to data collection and processing procedures. Finally, “fiscal year” refers to how … Continued
Data Updates

Data Updates

CVSuite updates data throughout the year as new data becomes available from our data providers. We retroactively update all data years on the site with more accurate data so that year-over-year trends are comparable. It is important to distinguish the difference between a data version and a data year. Each update corresponds to a data version that allows us to track changes to the data between updates. Our data updates are assigned a data version number (i.e. 2018.3) that corresponds with Emsi’s data versions. A “data year” in the CVSuite refers to the actual year that the data represent. For example, … Continued

2007 to 2012 NAICS code transition

2007 to 2012 NAICS code transition

The United States Census Bureau has updated the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. This update will be reflected in the Creative Vitality™ Suite web tool effective April, 2015. Every five years, the Census Bureau reevaluates industry definitions and makes adjustments based on their analysis of changes in the economy. The Census Bureau update combines some creative industries into new industry categories that are more reflective of today’s economy. NAICS Codes Removed/NAICS Codes Added Following are two lists: One contains a list of NAICS codes that have been removed from the system and the second contains a list of … Continued

Nonprofit Methodology Change 2015

Nonprofit Methodology Change 2015

04/28/2017   Summary: Recent changes at the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS) in 2016 has delayed the release of the I990 Core PC data which is the main source for CVSuite’s nonprofit data. In order to avoid delays in CVSuite’s data update, we investigated other sources for nonprofit revenues data. We researched a new methodology that is equally comparable to the I990 Core PC data that uses the same data source NCCS uses to create the I990 Core PC file. Nonprofit revenues data originates from the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) financial files, a collection of I990 filings from all nonprofit businesses throughout the US. … Continued
Industry Earnings Data and Sales Data: What is the difference?

Industry Earnings Data and Sales Data: What is the difference?

In August 2015, the CV™Suite began showcasing Industry Earnings data rather than Industry Sales. Although Industry Sales data is still available on the site, Industry Earnings data will provide CV™Suite users with a more comprehensive measure of economic impact in their community. First, it is important to make clear that Industry Sales and Industry Earnings measure two different types of impacts on the creative economy: Industry Sales Sales (also referred to as revenue) is calculated by multiplying the price at which goods or services are sold by the number of units or amount sold. Industry sales is comprised of the amount … Continued
Region Levels

Region Levels

The region level dropdown allows for exploration of granting data by different types of geographies. Region selected, is the region you have selected for the rest of the tool. State, county, zip code and MSA are available as well as congressional district. The congressional districts are updated yearly, so when seeing an older data year, please keep in mind the districts are specific to the most current year. You can find more details about this subject on our map tiles page.
Map Controls

Map Controls

There are two different controls that allow customization of the granting map. Once making a selection from the dropdown use the “apply” button to submit the change. Region Level: show granting data by region selected, state, county, MSA or congressional district Year: available years of data (only changes data on the map, not throughout the tool)
