GETTING STARTED – PART 5/6

SNAPSHOT REPORT

The Snapshot Report is a single page report covering the major aspects of your region’s creative economy. Similar to the Dashboard it includes information on CVI values, creative occupations, creative industries, and nonprofit revenues. There are also some additional statistics on trends and top industry and occupation groups. The snapshot report is a perfect report to print on-the-go for internal meetings, sharing with board members and upper management, or even for legislators. Let’s take a look at all of the sections in the report.

You will learn:

  • What data is on the snapshot report
  • How to present and communicate the findings

SECTION 1 CVI VALUE

This section displays your region’s current CVI value and the past five years of CVI performance. The CVI is a per capita measurement that compares your region’s creative economy concentration to the United States. Similar to a location quotient, a CVI greater than one indicates creative activity concentration greater than the comparison region.  The Index combines three major indicators: creative jobs from 36 occupation groups, industry sales from 7 core creative industries, and nonprofit arts revenues.

SECTION 2 CREATIVE OCCUPATIONS

This section displays the number of creative occupation jobs in your region workforce with annual percent change from the previous year. The top 5 occupation groups provide some insight into the size of your biggest job contributors.

SECTION 3 CREATIVE INDUSTRIES

This section displays the total creative industries earnings distributed in your region with annual percent change from the previous year. The top 5 industries groups provide some insight into the largest industries pumping money back into the local economy.

SECTION 4 NONPROFIT REVENUES

This section displays the total nonprofit arts revenue the nonprofit sector is generating locally. Most arts agencies are directly supporting artists as well as local nonprofits. Growth and the sustainability in nonprofit revenues can be an indicator of your efforts in supporting this sector through programming and other economic initiatives.

SECTION 5 DATA SOURCES

The last page of the Snapshot Report displays the sources of the data and the code selections used. The data provided on the report is provided by the Creative Vitality Suite, Emsi, and the Internal Revenue Service. This page is more technical and is provided for transparency in case the information needed to be verified or reproduced.

HOW TO USE THIS REPORT

The Snapshot Report is most effective when the insights are paired with local stories from the community. Your agency can summarize programming and initiatives that may have contributed to industry and occupation sectors. For example, explaining which creative industries would have seen benefits from your organization’s operational grants would validate the trends seen in the industry data. Another example would be to talk about the number of creative jobs within the region and the number of artists supported by projects grants. With supplemented stories the Snapshot Report can demonstrate your impact in the creative economy.
